LEESBURG, Fla. — Police on Wednesday identified a man found dead with a gunshot to the face in a Leesburg lake off Herlong Park on Tuesday morning as 68-year-old Timothy Kevin Jones of The Villages.

Police said Jones had been reported missing Monday evening by Marion County officials and detectives believe the death was the result of a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot.

According to a Leesburg police report obtained Wednesday, fishermen discovered a man’s body floating face down off a dock in Lake Griffin about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A police search of the area — on the north side of U.S. Highway 441, near Canal Street —  revealed a parked Ford F-150 pick-up truck that eventually was determined to be registered to Jones. At least one media report stated a suicide note was found in the vehicle

The police report adds the body had sustained severe damage, likely “posthumously” caused by animals.
