Small plane crashes in swampy area at Leesburg International Airport

LEESBURG – The pilot of a small single-engine plane is lucky to be walking around after their airplane crashed into a swampy area at the Leesburg International Airport just after 11:00 am Thursday morning.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Joe Mera of the Leesburg Fire Department, the pilot, who has not been identified, was attempting to land their plane at the Leesburg Airport but for unknown reasons did not make it to the runway and landed in a small pond near runway 3.

Leesburg Fire Department, Lake County Fire Rescue, and Lake EMS arrived on scene and evaluated the pilot’s injuries. The pilot refused any further medical attention.

According to Mera, there were no other occupants in the plane at the time of the incident.

Central Florida Wire was unable to reach the scene of the crash as it was a swampy area, however, video footage of the plane was captured by WFTV’s Channel 9 helicopter and can be seen HERE.
