Man Accused of Having Sex with Teen Arrested

GROVELAND, Fla. – A Groveland man was arrested after allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old girl according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrest reports.

Deputies responded to a home in Groveland at 4:50 am Thursday morning after receiving a call from the victim’s grandfather stating that he had woken up to find his granddaughter missing from her bedroom.

The caller stated that he found the victim in the back seat of a disabled vehicle on the property along with 18-year-old Jerimiah Avant.

According to the report, when found, Avant and the victim were both “unclothed”.

The victim’s grandfather told deputies that he believed the two were having sex judging by the way Avant was moving.

The victim’s mother stated that her daughter had been staying at her grandfather’s house in an effort to keep her away from Avant.

Avant reportedly lived near the mother’s house and would come by and see the victim even after being told by her parents to stay away from her, according to the victim’s mother.

When questioned, Avant denied having sex with the minor and stated that he only came over after he received a text message from the victim.

Avant also admitted to bringing marijuana with him to smoke with the teen. He also told deputies that the victim told him she was fifteen years old.

Avant was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious conduct on a person under 16-years-old, traveling to meet a minor to commit and an unlawful sex act, and delivery of marijuana to a minor less than 18-years-old.

He was transported to the Lake County Jail where he is currently being held in lieu of a $30,000 bond.

Avant is scheduled to appear in court on July 10.
