TAVARES — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is hosting “Saturday in the Gardens: Grow and Eat Caribbean Style” from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 at the Lake County Extension Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.
In addition to its succulent citrus, Central Florida is the ideal locale to grow fruits at home. Discover Caribbean crops, plant them in your own yard, and eat them at your table or right off of the tree. Join Extension Agents Brooke Moffis and Mia Wilchcombe, alongside the Master Gardeners, as they discuss produce hailing from the islands and their proper cooking techniques.
Registration is $15 and includes the “Simply Florida: a Taste of Flavors from the Sunshine State” hardcover recipe book and food samples. The class is part of the Extension’s year-long Roots Up series, which explores the journey that food takes on its way from the farm to the fork. Each session provides an overview of agricultural production, selection tips, and cooking techniques and will conclude with an opportunity to sample some tasty recipes.
Upcoming presentations in the series include “Creature Cuisine” in August, “Fall into Veggies” in September and “Sweet as Can Bee” in October.
Those with food allergies should be aware that food items prepared or distributed as part of UF/IFAS Extension events may contain milk, egg, gluten, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish; and could be prepared in a facility that may be exposed to any of these ingredients.
