Recall on Frozen Peas and Mixed Veggies

The National Frozen Foods Corporation issued a voluntary recall on several popular frozen vegetables. The recall targetted frozen veggies sold nationwide at stores including WalMart and Target.

According to the report, frozen not-ready-to-eat green peas and mixed veggies distributed between September 2, 2015, and June 2, 2016, were at risk of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne bacteria which can cause a serious infection in children, the elderly or persons with weak immune systems. The infection, known as Listeria, may show symptoms such as high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea in healthy individuals. It may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among infected pregnant women.

The report states, “The frozen green peas and frozen mixed vegetables are being recalled as a precaution with the health and safety of consumers as [a] top priority. The recall was the result of a sample tested by the company which revealed that the finished products may potentially be contaminated with the bacteria. The Food and Drug Administration has been made aware of this recall. There have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled items to date.”

Although following cooking instructions may reduce the risk of infection, people who consume the recalled vegetables may still become infected.

To see if you have any of the recalled vegetables in your freezer, you can identify them by the date codes on the bag. Here is a list of all the codes of the recalled vegetables.

Consumers are advised to not consume the possibly contaminated vegetables. If you find your code on the recall list, you can return it to the store you purchased them for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact the National Frozen Food Corporation at 1-800-253-8269 Monday – Friday 8.am to 5 p.m. (Pacific Time).
