TAVARES — Qualifying emergency food and shelter programs managed by local service agencies are encouraged to apply for $34,969 in federal funds awarded to Lake County through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
A local board made up of representatives from county government, United Way, The Salvation Army, and American Red Cross, as well as advocates for the homeless, faith-based organizations and community partners will determine how the funds will be distributed.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:
- Be a private voluntary nonprofit or unit of government
- Have a voluntary board established and be eligible to receive federal funds if a private voluntary organization
- Have an accounting system
- Practice nondiscrimination
- Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
Lake County has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with various organizations throughout the county, providing more than 36,900 meals and assisting 235 individuals with utility and rent or mortgage payments.

Applications are also available at the Lake County Community Services Department, 315 W. Main St., Suite 233, Tavares, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday (closed Tuesday, July 4).
Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017.
