GROVELAND, Fla. – Sheriff’s officials on Tuesday identified the body found buried in a rural area of Groveland on Saturday as missing 23-year-old Essence Owens, of Orlando.

Owens’ body had been discovered in a shallow grave behind a vacant home at 16420 Douglas Road by a visiting Realtor and potential buyers, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. John Herrell said an autopsy was conducted, but they have yet to determine a cause of death.

Herrell said Tuesday that while they are obviously treating the find as “suspicious,” he couldn’t reveal whether there were any signs of foul play or how detectives believe she died.

Herrell added Owens was reported missing to the Orlando Police Department on Aug. 15.
